I've Been Thinking...
Updated: Aug 11

It's been a while since I've written here.
For a long time, I felt like I needed to explain where I'd been.
Now I realise...
The reason I stepped away is the very reason I'm back.
The last couple of years have been some of the hardest of my life.
As a single mum to two incredible children, one of whom has additional needs, life became less about thriving and much more about surviving.
There were school meetings.
Appointments.
Phone calls.
Advocating.
Days where I was running on empty.
Days where I questioned whether I had anything left to give.
And if I'm honest...
There were times when I simply didn't have the capacity to keep showing up here as well.
It didn't feel right to write about rest while forgetting to rest myself.
It didn't feel right to encourage other people to set boundaries when I was still learning how to protect my own.
So I stepped away.
Not because I'd given up.
Because I needed to live the advice I'd been sharing.
Over the last few months, something has quietly shifted.
Not because life suddenly became easier.
It hasn't.
My circumstances haven't magically changed.
I'm still parenting.
I'm still caregiving.
I'm still navigating all the beautifully messy, exhausting, unpredictable moments that come with family life.
But I've started noticing something.
Tiny moments.
A cup of tea in the garden.
Watering flowers in the sunshine.
A deep breath before reacting.
A handwritten picture from my daughter that arrived exactly when I needed it.
A laugh I wasn't expecting.
A moment where my shoulders softened, if only for thirty seconds.
Those moments didn't remove the challenges.
But they reminded me that flourishing doesn't always happen after adversity.
Sometimes...
It happens right in the middle of it.
That realisation has changed the way I think about wellbeing.
It has changed the way I think about burnout.
And it has changed the direction of Flourish with Nikki.
Going forward, you'll still find conversations about self-care, burnout and Positive Psychology here.
But you'll also find something more honest.
We'll talk about the invisible mental load.
The realities of caregiving.
The guilt.
The joy.
The frustration.
The hope.
The moments that don't make it onto highlight reels.
Most of all...
We'll look for the tiny blooms.
The moments that remind us we're still here.
Still growing.
Still finding our way.
Because I've been thinking...
Maybe we've been measuring flourishing against the wrong standard.
Maybe flourishing isn't about waiting until life is perfect.
Maybe it's about learning to notice the moments that quietly sustain us while life is still wonderfully, beautifully messy.
If you've found your way here because you're tired of holding everything together...
Welcome.
If you're a parent...
A caregiver...
Someone who's quietly carrying more than most people realise...
You're in the right place.
I'm so glad you're here.
So this is less of an "I'm back."
And more of a...
Let's walk this next part together.
With love,
Nikki
